The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power
From September 2, Prime Video
We’ve been waiting for eons - well, it feels like eons - for the much-publicized new Prime Video series based on JRR Tolkien’s writing to arrive, and we’re finally here, a few weeks earlier than originally planned, with two back-to-back episodes The editorial, a new episode drops every Friday after that. Once again, we can immerse ourselves in Middle-Earth and meet a new cast of elves, dwarves, wizards, hobbits and orcs, and re-acquaintance with some familiar characters, including young Galadriel, budding necromancer Sauron, and the fiery Balrog. With a billion dollar budget, this is the most expensive TV series ever produced, and perhaps half of that has gone on to shrink Lenny Henry, at 6 feet 3 inches, to the size of The Hobbit. The story takes place thousands of years before the events depicted in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, at a time when great powers were formed, vast empires rose and fell, unlikely heroes emerged, and untold evil took over. Pretty much what we see in the news every day. Rings of Power comes to a very crowded fantasy space, and takes on the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, but we think the allure of Tolkien’s world-building will be too alluring to miss, and fans will eagerly flock back to Middle-earth.
