Saturday morning update: “The grades don’t count as much this morning thanks to the brilliant idea of National Film Day,” an industry source shouted to us this morning. They were talking about the challenges the studio’s box office analysts are facing to tie in exactly what will be #1 over the 4-day weekend.
Despite all the good intentions by the film establishment to push business through a slow weekend, and take a page out of the book what has been done in Spain to increase acceptance, it doesn’t create a windfall of money for the market. But several films are expected to show 150%-200% gains at the box office Saturday through Friday, thanks to $3 on National Film Day today.
What we heard when entering the weekend was that the pre-sales for Friday were a few, while all the action is today. With a lower weekend last summer at $53.3 million, how do we judge the success of national cinema if today is still a lousy day, in dollars, even with cheaper tickets?
Why through admissions processes, and here comes the role of box office analytics firm EntTelligence, which actually calculates seats sold in a 3-day period. Among those who bought tickets this past weekend, EntTelligence measures 1.7 million, so if the day comes much higher than that, it’s clear that some word of mouth has spread around National Film Day.
In all, last weekend, EntTelligence had 4.2 million admissions. During Labor Day 2021, which, of course, has the blessing of Disney/Marvel Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings It made a record opening 4-day summertime weekend with $94.6 million. The 3-day segment for all films during Labor Day 2021 was 7.8 million records, with 2.8 million tickets exposed on Saturdays a year ago.
However, on a dollar basis, the 3-day share of $58.4 million this weekend is up slightly, +10% from last weekend’s slump.
Say what you will about a lackluster weekend, but suffice to grab the highest-grossing movie of the year, Tom Cruise Top Gun: MaverickAnd the higher and near 700 million. Paramount is recalling the operating total by Monday at $699.28 million. However, competitors believe that it can exceed the figure of the seventh century. Even if it doesn’t, the sequel will top $700 million next week. Bravo’s continuation of a movie that not only made its bread in New York City and Los Angeles, but played coast to coast bringing out people who barely go to the movies.
But what is number 1? Competing studio shows are scattered all over the place with a Sony recall Spider-Man: There’s no way home - More fun stuff #1 for the weekend at around $7 million for 4 days. But others own Culver City studio Express train With $6.1 million at the end of the fifth week. According to Sony’s calculations, Spider Man will take number 1 with $6.1 million over 4 days.
If you haven’t read the summer box office dossier yet, he is here. At $3.35 billion, +91% from last year, we’re still going up, so the studios have nothing to complain about. However, cash-strapped exhibitors will require more, and will need to remake themselves.
