Constana, Romania - The first day of the Beach World Championships final on Saturday included a knockout round and first round of group competition, due to weather delays.
Three US athletes are undefeated after the first day at Mamaia Beach, women’s wrestler Mia Makaluso of Otisville, New York at 60 kg and Isabo Chalak of Oak Lawn, Illinois at 70 kg, as well as men’s wrestler Tay Luthin of Columbia at 80 kg.
Macaluso defeated fellow U.S. teammate Josephine Wermouth of St. Charles, Iowa, with a 21-second pin in his first match of the first group, which includes four wrestlers. Wermouth had to win a knockout match to qualify for the group competition, which she won with a pin against Angela Pires Goncalves of Portugal.
Schalak also tied with fellow US teammate in her second set match, Maren Anderson of Tinley Park, Illinois, which she defeated 3-0. It was a rematch in the 2022 U.S. Beach Championship Series Finals, which Schalak won. There are four wrestlers in Group B.
Loethen had to win the knockout match to advance to Group A, which was a 3-0 victory over Jose Vinagger Alves Machado.
Nine American wrestlers dropped their opening match from the group’s action. All American wrestlers will complete their group stage role on Sunday morning, except for Erin Kramer who weighs over 70kg in the women’s event. Kramer was beaten in a knockout match and did not advance to the group competition.
All remaining American wrestlers still have a chance to advance to the championship bracket, which is determined by the results of Robbins’ group tour. This will be one elimination category, which will ultimately determine who will win the medals on Sunday afternoon.
There are five American athletes competing in the Beach World Championships final in Constanta and are currently in the UWW Beach World Series rankings: Jamal Morris (No. 10 at 80 kg), Mitchell Cook (No. 11 at 50 kg), Laura White (No. 12 at 50 kg) , Mia Macaluso (No. 14 at 60kg) and Maren Anderson (No. 17 at over 70kg). The Beach World Series Final receives four times the points in the Beach World Series ranking system, so placement at Constanta is very important.
This is the third of five Beach World Series events that will set the stage for the 2023 Beach World Games in Bali, Indonesia, from August 5-12. The first two 2023 Beach World Series events will complete the qualification process. The top eight athletes of each weight class and gender from these five events will earn a spot in their NOC quota at the World Beach Games
Team USA is still striving for its first major gold medal since Beach Wrestling was launched as an international wrestling style in 2007. The USA has won 19 different international medals, either at the UWW Beach World Championships, the ANOC World Beach Games or the UWW Beach World . Event series, including four silvers and 15 bronzes.
The contest runs at 10:00 AM on Sunday and ends later in the day. Since there are fewer matches on Saturday, the schedule may change slightly on Sunday. Constanta is seven hours ahead of US Eastern Time.
All work will go on Floristling
